Letters from Our Soldiers

So how far does a simple box of toiletries, treats, and a kind note really go?

OCONUS, May 15, 2016 - We just received 5 packages from you and we wanted to give our thanks to the men, women, and children that took the time in sending these packages to us. We were over whelmed as we opened each box and distributed the contents throughout the Soldiers in our unit/team. We all found it very hard to come up with the words that could describe the gratitude and thankfulness that we all experienced in receiving the gifts. It is because of concerned citizens such as yourself that we continue to serve and protect our great Nation, the United States of America. The love and generosity you have shown us will stay with us for our remaining time of deployment, and even for many years after our re-deployment. The picture I am sending was taken back in November of 2015. Since then, we have grown in numbers and some have changed out with other members of the service. We will be sending an updated photo in the near future. God Bless each and every one of you, God Bless our Families, and God Bless the Greatest Nation on the face of the earth, the United States of America! ~~ SGM Seann ------

Memorial Day 2016

My Uncle Floyd’s grave in LuxembourgMy Uncle Floyd’s grave in LuxembourgTampa, FL, May 27, 2016 -  During the family gatherings and cookouts this Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to remember those who have died for the benefit of our Nation.

My Uncle Floyd D. Cheatham is one of them.

In 2001 when my dad learned we had swapped homes with a family in Europe for six weeks, and were going to visit Floyd’s grave in Luxemburg while we were there, he told me a story.  He had a neighbor directly across the street from them in Tampa.    She is a German who married an American.   Helga and Bill had had company for several days.  Bill had taken the company to nearby MacDill Air Force Base to show them around.  It was a couple they knew from when they were in the Air Force. They had come to see Bill and Helga after their travels.  She was from California and he was from Florida.  She wanted a picture of a soldier from California and one from Florida.  She was a teacher at that time and was writing some type of a report. He had retired from the Air Force and they had decided to go abroad.  When they came back to Florida to visit his family, they came to visit Bill and Helga.

My step mom Stella had walked across the street to see Helga for a few minutes before Bill and the company came back home.  She was sitting at the counter in their kitchen looking through the photo album while Helga was getting things ready for their lunch. In thumbing through it, she saw a picture of a grave.  My dad still had an antique shop, and was in the shop that day.  Stella asked Helga if she could take the album and show the picture to my dad.   When she showed the picture to my dad and told him it was my uncle, he said a physical force moved through him she showed him the photograph -- the grave cross of Floyd D. Cheatham.  Helga had no idea the family relation.  And out of all of the cemeteries in Europe, and all of the graves in that one cemetery, she came to Floyd’s, and then to my step mom, to my dad, and then to me, and now to you.  Read more ...
